Weekly Photo Challenge : Monument

Perhaps better described as a Cathedral than a Monument, Florence’s Duomo located in the Centre of the City is indeed a monumental building. Building of the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore commenced in 1296 and structurally completed in 1436. The 114.5 m high dome designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, is reputed to be the largest masonry dome in the world. Visible from almost everywhere in the City, the building has an imposing presence on Florence’s skyline. I had an opportunity last year, to climb up between the inner and outer dome, camera in hand, to a viewpoint which provides a wonderful overview of the City below. Monument is the prompt on the Weekly Photo Challenge this week, and images of and from the Duomo are my response to the prompt….

Weekly Photo Challenge : Threshold

Siena’s Duomo is accessed from the west by a threshold of steps that lead you to the Visitors entrance. The threshold of continuous steps elevates this building dating from the 1200’s above the square.
Visited by more than a million visitors annually, this threshold becomes a meeting point for lovers and friends, a place to sit and ponder, have a friendly chat, etc. Threshold is the prompt on the Weekly Photo Challenge this week, and images of and at Siena’s Duomo are my response to the prompt……………

Weekly Photo Challenge : Inside

Built before 1350, Rising 88m above Piazza del Campo, Siena’s premier square, is Torre del Mangia. Imagine climbing 88m up a staircase within a tower with almost 3m thick walls, it can get rather claustrophobic :-). Inside, is the prompt for the weekly photo challenge this week, so images of the inside of the Courtyard at the base of the tower, a view of the staircase from the bottom looking up, and a view through an opening, looking down onto the popular piazza are my response to the prompt. The first image, is a view of the tower from the piazza, outside.

Weekly Photo Challenge : Juxtaposition

The blogs been quiet for a while, because I’ve been away travelling. So, I figured it would be appropriate to start my blogging New Year with some images from my trip. During the 2013 Festive Season Piazza Maggiore in Bologna had one of its historic facades as the backdrop for a what appeared to be an interactive lighting installation. As visitors to the installation walked over a projected image on the floor, their movements appeared to create motion within the projected image. Juxtaposition is the prompt for the weekly photo challenge, so images of the modern light installation projecting onto the historical façade are my response to the prompt……………..
