Cape Sugarbird enjoying the abundance of choice, in its search for the sweetest spot from numerous fully opened, brightly coloured pincushion flowers at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Cherry on top is the prompt on the Weekly Photo Challenge this week, and images of the sunbird on the Pincushion Flowers are my response to the prompt.

“Pincushion” flowering plants from the Proteaceae family is a genus of about 50 species, yet most of us only get to see a few of these. Flowering between September and February, these orange and yellow flowerheads attract Sunbirds and Sugarbirds. Walking through Kistenbosch Botanical Gardens in Cape Town, one encounters many of these with intricate repetitive patterns in different colour variants on each. Interestingly, I came across one of these flowering plants that appeared to be monochromatic, with yellow flowerheads in different stages of opening up. Monochromatic is the prompt on the weekly photo challenge this week, and images two variants of the “pincushion” flower are my response to the prompt.
