Danger!

Travelling around Iceland in Winter, one soon realises that signage recommending wearing of crampons, is actually excellent advice. Parking areas, access paths and even walkways to popular sites like Waterfalls and Volcano craters are more often than not, covered with snow and ice, making walking without crampons extremely challenging if not dangerous.

Wanderlust

Iceland is often referred to as the Land of Fire and Ice, add to that Geysirs, Waterfalls, Geothermal Lakes, Black Sand Beaches, Northern Lights, Breathtaking Landscapes etc, enough to fulfil any Wanderlust that may be lurking within you :-). I’ve often read about Photographers saying, that travelling around Iceland takes a long time, because you have to stop all the time, there’s a picture around every corner ……… how true that is. On a visit to this incredible Country earlier this year, I had the opportunity to shoot some of these images, but will definitely have to go back to fetch a whole lot of others that I left behind :-):-).

Glimpses of Cape Town’ s 2017 “Infecting the City” Public Arts Festival

Now in its 10th year, the 2017 “Infecting the Arts” Festival made an appearance at Public Spaces of Cape Town last week. This multi disciplinary Festival of Public Art integrates within communal spaces of the CBD of the City of Cape Town. In a collaboration between the Africa Centre and the Institute of Creative Arts, this initiative in 2017 provides a platform for artists and art forms opportunities to occupy City Spaces and ignite expressions of Freedom. The exciting 4 day programme ended on Saturday. I was fortunate to witness two of the performances an Acrobatic sequence by Joan Catala Caprasio from Barcleona, Spain, who engaged with the audience and kept us captivated throughout the sequence. The second, a fast paced, energetic and superbly executed dance routine by a group of dancers from the Indoni Dance Arts and Leadership Academy. These are some of my glimpses of the performances I witnessed.

Green

Marble panels in various shades of green adorn the Duomo di Firenze (Florence Duomo). Dating back to 1436, the Cathederal is one of three buildings on the UNESCO World Heritage site within the historic centre of Florence. The building is situated on Piazza del Duomo, reputed to be one of Italys largest Churches, and home to the largest brick dome ever constructed. Green is the prompt on the Weekly Photo Challenge this week, and abstract images of the Duomo are my response to the prompt.

Atop

The glass dome built at the top of the rebuilt Reichstag building in Berlin, designed by Sir Norman Foster, to symbolise the reunification of Germany. The glass dome offers 360 degree views of the Berlin skyline, from the viewing deck at the base of the dome as well as two spiralling ramps that takes visitors to the top. A well frequented tourist destination in Berlin. The dome is positioned above the Debating Chamber of the Bundestag, the German Parliament. A central cone with mirrors reflects natural light, through a glazed ceiling into the Chamber. Atop is the prompt on the Weekly Photo Challenge this week, and images of the Reichstag dome are my response to the prompt..

The Road Taken

The Festive Season turned out to be a very busy time in Prague. So, all attempts to get some “people free” pictures of the infamous Charles Bridge were not very fruitful, or particularly scenic. 😦 I tried visiting the bridge at different times of the day, sunrise, midday, late afternoon, evening, there just seemed to be a constant stream of people traversing the bridge. So, on my last evening in Prague, I decide to venture off the bridge, and walk along the river, beside the bridge. To my surprise, there was nobody there, it was the right thing to do, I managed to get some nice side views of the bridge and its arches, with lovely reflections of the environment on the river. There was even a tourist boat that drifted by adding some movement to one of the images. The road taken is the prompt on the Weekly Photo Challenge this week, and images of Prague’s infamous Charles bridge are my response to the prompt.

Shadow

The 45m high Ponte Dom Luis (Bridge) in Porto, spanning across the Duoro River provides the perfect vantage point for an overview of the Ribeira District along the waters edge. With numerous Cafe’s and restaurants lining the riverside district, the area attracts tourists and locals alike. The low sun angle in the late afternoon creates larger than life shadows of people walking on the timber access ramp from the quayside to the road level. Shadow is the prompt on the Weekly Photo Challenge this week, and images of these shadows are my response to the prompt.

Repurpose

An entire car chassis, large and smaller car parts, bicycles, street signs, building signage, metal pieces, animal horns etc were craftily put together in a rustic art display outside a self catering establishment in a little town in the Northern Cape. The entrance canopy made out of the bonnet of a car, and an old car door forming part of a gate were some of the innovative uses of the larger components. Repurpose is the prompt on the Weekly Photo Challenge this week and images of this display are my response tro the prompt.

Graceful

The Merkja river in Iceland has several waterfalls along it’s length, Gluggafoss (Merkjafoss) in Southern Iceland near the town of Hvolsvöllur was one that I had an opportunity to visit. Gluggafoss meaning Window Falls, derives its name from the series windows that appear in the tunnels and grooves formed in the rock by the flowing water cascading gracefully down a series of steps totalling 120metres. Graceful is the prompt on the Weekly Photo Challenge this week, and images of the these falls and abstracts of it are my response to the prompt..

Ambience

I’ve been away, so have not had an opportunity to wish one and all a Happy and Peaceful New Year, fingers crossed 🙂 its going to be a wonderful year for all of us. Thank you to all followers, commenters, readers, and all others who visit my blog from time to time, without you, this blog would have no purpose……….

I had an opportunity to observe the Northern Lights on a visit to Sweden and Norway a few years ago, it was an overwhelmingly amazing experience, which I hoped to repeat in future. Well, I was hoping another opportunity would arise on my recent trip to Iceland, and lo and behold after a few days of cloudy skies, the lights came out to play :-). Ambience is the prompt on the Weekly Photo Challenge this week, and images of the Northern Lights in Berunes, Iceland are my response to the prompt…….
